So, I got my results and was really surprised, but very happy to receive a 2:1 BA (hons). Now to just clinch that all important Graphic Design job and kick start my career.

The premise of this brief was to take something really mundane and boring and make it magnificent. The suggestions were things like a corkscrew or a household nail etc etc but as a lover of all things typographic I decided to look at the Ampersand (&) symbol. I love how it flows and its shape and also how much creative freedom it allows when creating a new typeface as, lets face it, it is barely used in modern day society.

So, i went on to create a logotype using the ampersands from 26 different typefaces:

In addition, an ornate booklet which encompasses the origins, and definition of the ampersand, as well as its evolution and some very pretty poetry and songs written about it. I also created a badge pack to go along with it- so all in all a fairly ornate and decorative piece:

The premise of this brief was to convey a grand day out, this could be in the form of a day trip, a weekend away or even just a survival guide on how to beat the rainy day blues. It was very open ended and left a lot of scope for interpretation. I decided to take a trip to one of the smaller, more independent cinemas in Nottingham as i had lived here almost 3 years and never been. The building houses 4 cinemas, a cafe and a licensed bar, as well as a terrace and screening room.

So on my day at the cinema, i met with friends, chatted, ate, took photos of everything around me and recorded snippets of conversations and sounds surrounding me. I then went on to interpret this in type:

When approaching our end of year degree show, it seemed silly to get outside companies to design the promotional material for it. So we were set the brief of designing flyers, posters, invites, virals etc, basically whichever outcome we wanted to create designs for. In addition, we needed to come up with a unique concept which would attract industry to come see us as we realised most companies would receive hundreds of these types of invites from educational institutes across the country.

The concept I came up with was that our talent wouldn’t fit on a poster or invite, or even a website so they should come and see it all. Here are examples of what i created:

This brief from Abercrombie & Fitch was to design 6 garments and an inspiration book:

The brief required an inspiration book to be made, which would be a collection of textures, images and fabrics which related to Abercrombie & Fitch’s heritage and sensibilities and showed an understanding of the target audience.  This book would then help inform the tee designs.

4 t-shirts and 2 hoods had to be created which stuck to A&F’s design categories of ‘icon’ (the moose logo), ‘heritage’ (designs that relate to east coast life and the outdoors) and ‘logo’ (simply the A&F logo).

The premise of this brief was to create a typographical response to type found in the environment. This could be absolutely anything found in my chosen environment and the outcome could also take absolutely any format.

After a rough start I realised i needed to define one specific environment to focus on, and after a very thought provoking chat in tutorial I decided to concentrate on the scrawls of graffiti found on public toilet walls.

I took everything i found, split it into 4 categories and then typeset them back on to acetate. I then created a stop frame animation of the type growing over the walls.
Here are a few frames from the final piece:
